PhotoAlchemy |
|
|
PhotoAlchemy is a 30-year retrospective of travel, landscape and portrait
photography. The photographs are "found" in the sense that
nearly all were spontaneous and un-posed; nothing more than the
coincidence of events and a camera. |
|
|
All the photographs dated
before 2003 were made with a 35 mm camera. Photos dated before
1980 were all with a 50 mm lens on a Pentax Spotmatic. Between 1980 and
about 1995, they were taken with 28 mm and 24 mm lenses on a Canon A-1.
Between 1995 and 2002, the photographs were taken with either a 20 mm lens on a
Spotmatic or an Olympus point-and-shoot with a 38-105 zoom. |
|
|
Most of the photographs taken before 1990 were made on Kodachrome. From
1990, most of the photographs were shot with one or another of the varieties of Kodak and Fuji print film. |
|
|
Photos dated 2003 and later
are all digital. The cameras used were a Canon S50 (5 megapixels), a Canon
S70 (7 megapixels), or a Canon Rebel XT (8 megapixels). |

The slides and negatives for the photos on PhotoAlchemy were scanned on a
Polaroid SprintScan 4000 and processed using Photoshop. The smaller single-page images are all 800 by 600 pixels in size, are presented at
full resolution; the larger single-page images are 1600 by 1200 and are
presented at 1/2 resolution. All single-page images were processed through Macromedia®

The two rephotographic
projects have different origins. I have been interested in the work of C.E.
Watkins for a long time, and because I have a family connection to Oregon,
I have long been familiar with the landscape there. On
the other hand,
I didn't pay much attention to Eugène
Atget's photographs until after I had been in Paris. |
